Color OS 12 – See new features, availability, and more

Color OS 12: Oppo has finally announced its Color OS 12 software in China. This makes the company the second OEM after Samsung to unveil its Android 12 skin. An Android 12 beta for the Oppo Find X3 was introduced back in May. However, the same was not based on Color OS 12.

The new version of Color OS released in China is based on the Android 12 Developer Preview update. It is aimed more at developers and tech-savvy users than the general public. Of course, a global release for Color OS 12 should follow soon. The company has not yet announced any details.

The main features of Color OS 12

Simplification of the UI design

Color OS 12 is the title of a completely new UI language. The company has focused on order, with more spacer page layouts, increased text contrast, and distinctive hues. The icons are also given a new, softer look.

Oppo added 12 new animations to Color OS, more than 300 to be precise. The company says it used its “Quantum Animation Engine” to “mimic physical habits of drag, inertia, and rebound,” making user interface interactions more realistic, intuitive, and smoother.

Omoji – Animated Emojis

The new operating system also introduces 3D animated emojis called Omoji. They use Oppo’s face detection algorithm to allow users to create their personalized emoji avatars. Omoji can mimic facial movements and expressions in real time, just like Apple’s Animoji. Users can customize their Omojis by adjusting parameters like skin color, hair, eyes, nose, accessories, and more.

Smart Sidebar 2.0

Oppo’s also redesigned its Smart Sidebar – the menu that can be pulled up from the side of the phone for quick access to file transfers, apps, messages, and more. Smart Sidebar 2.0 includes six new tools. For example, if you search for a favorite song online, users can open it in the Music Player app. The Smart Sidebar can now help users compare prices while shopping online.

Cross-screen connection

Color OS 12 also offers a new PC connection feature called Cross-Screen Interconnection. It enables users to operate their phones through their laptops. In addition, it offers transfer speeds of 45Mbps, so you can send around 500 photos from your phone to your PC in just a minute. The feature supports most mainstream branded laptops installed with Windows 10 or higher.

Data protection features of Android 12

Android 12’s new privacy features make it into Color OS 12, too. That means you’ll be reminded of permission when third-party apps use your microphone, location, and camera. You also get access to the Android 12’s privacy dashboard, which you can use to manage and authorize app permissions.

Color OS 12 also has a secure photo sharing feature that can be used to erase sensitive information or data from original images. This feature also supports safe video sharing.

Color OS 12 availability

Oppo has announced that the Find X3 Pro Photographer Edition will be the first model to run on Color OS 12. The limited public beta will be released in October for the Find X3 series and OnePlus 9 series in China. It will also be released for the Find X2 series and Reno 6 series in November and for the Reno 5 series, K9, A95, A93, Ace2 series and OnePlus 8 series in December.

Oppo and OnePlus also recently announced a codebase integration for Oxygen OS and Color OS. At the time, OnePlus said that the fruits of this partnership will be seen on current devices with the release of Android 12. It is very likely that elements from Color OS 12 will also appear on OnePlus devices when upgraded to Android 12. How much impact will Oppos Software have on Oxygen OS in the future? We have to wait and see.
