Researchers at a top university in Hong Kong have developed a new antimicrobial coating that can be sprayed on surfaces to kill most bacteria and viruses – including that Corona virus – for up to 90 days.

The MAP-1 antimicrobial coating has been developed for use on a variety of surfaces, including glass, metals, plastics, leather and fabrics Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

The surface coating lasts “significantly longer” than conventional disinfectants According to university researchers, alcohol or bleach is used that loses its function when the liquids evaporate.

To accomplish this, it relies on heat-sensitive polymers, which the inventors say respond to touch or droplet contamination. To do this, a larger amount of disinfectant is released when a temperature rise is detected, which can occur when our hands touch a surface or when moisture comes from droplets.

The antimicrobial spray is scheduled to hit stores in Hong Kong in May in May, following clinical trials in the city Reuters. Shopping centers, schools, churches and sports training facilities in Hong Kong have used the coating, according to researchers who also say the coating’s ingredients are non-toxic. HKUST did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding whether MAP-1 would be available in the United States or other countries.

The spread of the coronavirus appears to have slowed in Hong Kong, where no new COVID-19 cases were reported for several days last week. From Monday, Hong Kong reported 1,038 coronavirus cases and four deaths.
