The San Diego Comic-Con, the gigantic four-day pop culture convention from July 23 to 26, was canceled due to the coronavirus crisis.
“Recognizing that countless attendees save and plan their conventions each year and how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely on their events for much of their livelihood, [officials] had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that concerns about COVID-19 might subside by summer. ” SDCC said in a statement. “Continuous monitoring of health warnings and recent statements by the governor of California have made it clear that it is not certain to push ahead with plans for this year.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom issued an order on March 19 to stay at home. He hasn’t given an end date yet.
The Comic-Con statement mentioned “deep regret” at the decision and said that the event will return from July 22nd to 25th, 2021.
Last month, the organizers of Comic-Con postponed a smaller congress. WonderCon Anaheim, which was planned for April 10-12, and also postponed the events planned for the Comic-Con Museum.
Many similar events had to be done Cancel or postpone the call approached earlier than planned dates. Seattle’s Emerald City Comic-Conscheduled for March 12-15 has been postponed less than a week before its launch date, but organizers hope to postpone the summer. The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival was postponed to October, and that South through southwest Festival is over for this year.
