TL; DR

  • Samsung’s latest foldable devices have reportedly seen much higher pre-orders in Korea.
  • It is claimed that 800,000 units of the Galaxy Z series have been pre-ordered in the market.
  • The Z Flip 3 apparently made up 60% of the units.

Samsung is hot on the market with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, offering lower prices, water resistance, and improved durability. Now it seems the phones are getting much better commercial reception in their home market than previous models.

Yonhap news reports that in Korea, 800,000 Galaxy Z-series foldable devices were pre-ordered during the weeklong pre-order period that ended yesterday (August 23), citing its own sources. The point of sale says 600,000 units have been pre-ordered through cellular providers and 200,000 units have been pre-ordered as unlocked devices.

The news agency also claimed that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 accounted for 60% of pre-orders. In other words, ~ 480,000 Galaxy Z Flip 3s were pre-ordered in Korea, versus ~ 320,000 on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. This wouldn’t be a surprise as the foldable clamshell is significantly cheaper than the Z Fold 3.

Our verdict: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 in the test – not a replacement for the Note, but a fine, foldable device

For what it’s worth, last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 reportedly hit 80,000 pre-order units in Korea. In particular, the performance of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 would certainly be a massive step up in comparison.

However, these reported numbers represent only a market and a short period of time, so we look forward to seeing the global sales. After all, Samsung’s Galaxy S21 is believed to have had great sales in the US in the first month, but poor sales worldwide after six months.

Still, Samsung’s sensible strategy of offering cheaper, more robust foldables seems a step in the right direction for now.
