TL; DR

  • A leaker claims that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will stick with a 108MP sensor for its main camera.
  • Samsung would instead focus on a third generation camera with improved performance.
  • Previous rumors suggested a periscope camera with continuous zoom.

Earlier rumors suggest that the Galaxy S22 Ultra could include some worthy camera upgrades, but an increase in resolution is apparently not in the pipeline. According to SamMobile, the well-known Leaker Ice Universe claimed that the main camera on the S22 Ultra will stay at the same 108 MP resolution that you saw in the S21 Ultra (and S20 Ultra).

Samsung would instead focus on “polishing” the third generation 108MP sensor. The Galaxy S22 Ultra camera might take higher quality shots, but it wouldn’t capture the most detailed images that can rival the best medium format cameras.

Previous leaks suggested that the Galaxy S22 Ultra could also include a redesigned periscope camera with continuous zoom that doesn’t rely as much on digital scaling to produce a sharp image. You may also see a front camera under the display.

Whatever the camera upgrades include, history suggests Samsung will launch the S22 family in early 2022.

It wouldn’t be a shocking move by Samsung. The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 108-megapixel sensor is still high-resolution by most standards, and the S22 wouldn’t suffer if its camera stayed at a familiar pixel count. However, this suggests that Samsung isn’t interested in rejoining the megapixel race anytime soon – it’s happy with its current position, even with competitors pushing for sharper camera technology.
