Samsung’s first in-display camera phone may also be its next big foldable
- Samsung is said to be introducing an in-display selfie camera on its future foldable phone.
- The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 may be the first Samsung phone to use this technology.
- According to the report, the phone will debut in late 2021.
Samsung will reportedly use its next large foldable phone as a test bed for its in-display camera technology. According to a report from Korea ETNewsThe Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 could be the first company to have a hidden camera sensor.
The in-display camera technology was first popularized by ZTE’s Axon 20 and uses a sensor under the display. Though the design should allow for a cleaner all-display appearance, unlike the notched Galaxy Fold and pierced Galaxy Z Fold 2, the camera quality is likely to see a mild nerf. Because light has to pass through the display to reach the sensor, the footage may not be as clear as traditional shooters.
However, the Korean company is investigating ways to circumvent this problem. The company is reportedly trying to increase the distance between the pixels of the display above the camera to allow more light to pass through to the sensor. However, this can affect the screen image quality in that particular area of the display.
In-display selfie cameras are coming in 2021

In-display selfie cameras didn’t show up as many expected. Although there are already production solutions, smartphone manufacturers stick to potholes and the strange notch to attach shooters to handsets. If the technology isn’t broken, why fix it? This is a feeling that is confirmed by Android Authority Readers too.
For Samsung, it makes sense to showcase the technology on a foldable phone rather than the flagship Galaxy S or Note. More screen real estate is the main reason to buy a foldable one, not the selfie camera quality.
However, Samsung is not alone in this area. Xiaomi announced that it will develop its own in-display camera technology with the first devices, which are scheduled to be released in 2021. We wouldn’t be surprised if other companies followed suit.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to debut in the third quarter of 2021, according to the report. This should give the company enough time to iron out issues before the flagship wave of 2022.
