Samsung Wear OS event scheduled for MWC 2021

One of the biggest surprises of 2021 so far is the announcement that Samsung and Google are teaming up to take on the king of the smartwatch industry: Apple. Samsung and Google (and Google’s newly acquired Fitbit) will work together to make Google’s Wear OS platform a better competitor to Apple’s watchOS.

We heard a little from Google about this partnership, but not much from Samsung. That’ll change on June 28th when Samsung holds a smartwatch-centric event at Mobile World Congress.

According to the official listing, the Samsung event will feature news about the “Galaxy Ecosystem” as well as a “New Watch Experience”. Samsung claims it is “reinventing smartwatches” and leaves little doubt on the subject for much of the event.

This will be the first in-depth study of Samsung’s own Samsung Wear OS experience. While Sammy would be unlikely to introduce any new Galaxy Watch hardware during the virtual event, it is a possibility. However, it is not unreasonable to assume that we will actually get a taste of what the new Wear OS will look like.

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4 will likely run the new Wear OS. They’ll be the company’s first non-Tizen smartwatches in years.
