Samsung made waves about a month ago when it announced that it would offer updates to the Android version for a variety of its devices for three years. The Korean brand announces that it will offer key version updates for the Galaxy S10 and later, Galaxy Note 10 and later, and several other devices for three years.
In fact, the budget-oriented Galaxy A series is also included in the update campaign, with the exception of the mid-range Galaxy A51. So we asked ourselves whether this promise alone would be enough for customers to actually want to buy Samsung phones.
Results
The poll was released on August 22nd with 6,730 votes. And the results are mostly positive for the Korean brand. Almost 94% of readers said they would buy a Samsung device because of this new approach to updates. A little over 6% of people voted negatively and said they didn’t care about the new politics.
We cannot say that we are at all surprised by this result as before Android Authority A survey found that around 96% of respondents wanted Android updates for three to five years. In addition, another Android Authority A survey found that ~ 85% of readers would not consider a phone if it didn’t get a single major Android update.

Then it is clear that Android version updates are extremely important to our readers, as expected. But will this update policy lead to higher sales for Samsung? We just have to wait and see.
Your comments
- Adrian Bönde: 3 years do not solve a problem. It should take a lot longer. Apple has 5 years, which should be the minimum for any smartphone! The hardware is able to guarantee compatibility with the latest software versions for many years. At these smartphone prices, companies should take responsibility by keeping these phones alive for as long as possible!
- Jeshurun Kandy: I’m not that interested in the manufacturer’s updates as I’d rather flash a custom ROM, with basically perpetual updates, especially for popular devices. – From my Galaxy Note 3 with Android 10
- anonymous 42: this is great, I’ve already thought about saving up and buying the samsung A51 because it’s a great phone. And it’s good to know if I get the phone, not only would I get a phone that has Android 10 and still get Android updates, but 3 of them. That said, I can get Android 13 when it comes out, which is more than even flagships. Another reason for me to save up for the A51.
- D9: Good for Samsung. I can keep one of their phones for a couple of years and then give it to a relative or friend who has some life left in terms of software support.
