Samsung Galaxy Watch 4
TL; DR
- Samsung has rolled out its WalkieTalkie app on the Galaxy Watch 4 series.
- The app enables wearable owners to communicate using a push-to-talk system.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic only became official a few weeks ago. Wear OS 3 runs on both devices, which gives them access to a variety of apps in the Google Play Store. As a complement to this utility, Samsung now has an official walkie-talkie app (h / t XDA).
As the name suggests, the app effectively transforms the new smartwatches into push-to-talk walkie-talkies. The app allows users to create channels and have “instant conversations” with others in their contact list. However, these contacts also require a Galaxy Watch 4. It is also an official Samsung app, so you will need a Samsung account to use it.
Samsung doesn’t clarify the functionality of the app, so there’s no telling whether the walkie-talkie app will be of any use to hikers or those looking for a backup communication medium. Samsung recommends using the app first “while the watch is connected to your smartphone,” which indicates that it will work on its own once it is set up. The app also asks users for optional location access, which is used to “create your channel by looking for nearby friends via bluetooth”.
If you don’t like to talk to your watch, you can of course always pick up your phone and Call this contact, but where is the fun in it?
If you don’t already own a Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 4 Classic but are interested in purchasing one, you can purchase one using the buttons above. Also, get the Walkie Talkie app from the Google Play Store below.
