TL; DR

  • In Seattle, a Samsung cell phone spontaneously went up in flames on a landed plane.
  • The crew had no choice but to extend evacuation slides and remove all passengers. Nobody was seriously injured.
  • According to reports, the phone was a Galaxy A21.

Last night, a plane that landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport had a serious problem. One fire produced so much smoke that the crew used inflatable slides to initiate an emergency evacuation of all passengers. Nobody was seriously injured.

Allegedly the phone burst spontaneously and caused a small fire. The crew used a battery bag – an emergency device on most flights – to put out the fire. At this point, however, the smoke was so widespread that the crew decided it was necessary to evacuate.

The incident was handled quickly and had no negative impact on other flights that day.

All lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones and other electronic devices pose a risk of fire and explosion. This shouldn’t be seen as an issue with the Galaxy A21 or any other Samsung phone. This was likely an isolated incident that just happened at a bad time. Fortunatly nobody was hurt.
