Samsung may be looking to cut costs on cooling tech for Galaxy S22

TL; DR
- Samsung is not allowed to use vapor chamber cooling with the Galaxy S22 series, as previously rumored.
- The phones could do with graphite thermal pads for heat dissipation.
Samsung apparently wants to save costs on heat dissipation technology for the Galaxy S22 series. According to a new rumor about Tipster FrontTron, the company is not allowed to use steam chamber cooling on the new flagships.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Samsung considering vapor chamber cooling for the Galaxy S22 series. A previous report also claimed that the technology would improve the phones’ efficiency and performance.
Samsung used vapor chambers on the Galaxy S10 series. However, the company later ditched the technology in favor of multilayer graphite thermal pads to help dissipate heat away from the CPU.
Is steam chamber cooling really important?
When Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 20 series, it used two types of cooling systems. Some Galaxy Note 20 Ultras used graphite thermal pads, while others got a copper vapor chamber for cooling. Many thought the lack of vapor chamber cooling on some Note 20 Ultra models was the reason the phone ran hot.
However, a study by iFixit employees found that there was little difference between the heat dissipation performance of vapor chambers and graphite. The publication quoted a thermal engineer as saying, “As long as you take the gap tolerances into account, it can be easy to swap them out.”
Regarding the cost, the engineer pointed out that Samsung was able to use heat pipes and vapor chambers for a long time due to the amount of devices sold. When Samsung first introduced a vapor chamber, the company estimated that it sold up to a million additional phones due to the novelty of a vapor chamber. The decision not to use the technology in newer phones like the Galaxy S21 and possibly the Galaxy S22 series could be because it is no longer as acclaimed as it was before. It probably won’t make much of a difference in performance either.
What do you think of Samsung sticking to graphite thermal pads to cool the Galaxy S22 phones? Is it really important to you? Take our survey above and drop us a line in the comments section.
