  • Samsung is reportedly working on a double foldable smartphone.
  • It is believed that the device could be revealed as early as the end of the year.

Samsung has set itself apart from the competition with its foldable phones as it was able to deliver both the foldable Galaxy Z Fold range and the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip line. It may also not stop at these form factors.

Nikkei Asia Review reports that Samsung is currently working on a double-folding smartphone, citing three sources familiar with the subject. The sources also claim that the new device could be revealed as early as the end of 2021.

The details of the double-fold leaflet are still being finalized according to the outlet’s sources, but the design is believed to be better suited for apps.

“The design is set so that the aspect ratio of the unfolded screen matches the mainstream 16: 9 or 18: 9 ratio, so more video games and other apps with better resolutions can run more smoothly on the device,” a source explained Nikkei Asia Review.

It’s unclear if this is a double-fold, foldable phone similar to the Xiaomi foldable prototype that allows you to fold back the top and bottom. We also saw patents and concepts for a device that folds into a Z shape, with one side folding back and the other side folding in. Presumably, Samsung is taking the latter approach as the company has stayed away from fold-out designs due to concerns about screen damage. This latter solution would mean that the screens are not completely exposed to potential damage.

The outlet’s sources also reiterated plans for new Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold devices, but an all-new design would mean another big leap forward for Samsung’s foldable business.
