For obvious reasons, many of us spend the final week of 2020 looking to the future. Samsung is hoping some people will look far enough ahead to reserve a spot in line for its yet-to-be-announced Galaxy S21 handset (not an official name, but likely a safe guess).
If you’re on the Samsung Mobile mailing list, you may have received an email forcing you to do so “Get ready to jump to the next galaxy.” The link will take you to a reservations page that has a few perks to get an early start on the company’s new flagship, including credits on other Samsung products like Galaxy earbuds.
The company recently announced that it will have more information in January – be it at CES or rather at a standalone event. That contradicts the trends that have led the company to showcase its latest Galaxy S devices closer to Mobile World Congress (the S20 pictured above was announced on Feb.11). Of course, MWC was delayed until the end of June next year and nothing is really normal.
As I noted in a recent article, 2020 was the toughest of a number of tough years for the smartphone industry. So why not start these pre-orders a little earlier? And hey, not everyone got what they wanted for their vacation. Why not treat yourself to a new phone?
The good news is that we (think we) know a lot about the unannounced phone. Samsung has never been great at keeping things under wraps and we are already seeing some key details that will be revealed a few weeks before the expected official reveal. Surprisingly, the camera specs appear to be more or less the same as the last model after the company promised some major imaging moves in 2021. Perhaps these updates will come in the form of software rather than hardware bumps.
Technical data from Winfuture Point – of course – to the Snapdragon 888 in the US, with the Exynos 2100 chip in other regions. The S21 has a 6.2-inch display and 4000 mAh battery, while the Plus improves performance to 6.7 inches and 4800 mAh per leak.
Samsung is expected to make everything official on January 14th.
