TL; DR
- The rumor mill says that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 could have a battery life of up to seven days.
- If so, the watch would hit pretty much any existing Wear OS smartwatch by a wide margin.
- However, it is quite possible that this time frame can only be achieved with a minimal “battery saving mode”.
One of the biggest complaints about Google’s current version of Wear OS is battery life. Most Wear OS watches can survive for a day before they need to be charged. If you use it for a lot of workouts, streaming music, or sleep tracking, you probably won’t even use it all day.
Well, that’s a ton of battery life for pretty much any wearable. That would be best for all Wear OS watches, most fitness-based watches like the Fitbit Sense, and even the Apple Watch. Therefore we are quite skeptical of this claim.
While Wear OS 3.0 watches like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 are likely to have better battery life than current models, seven days is a big leap. It’s possible that this number reflects the use of some sort of battery saver mode, rather than the standard out-of-the-box mode. Mobvoi’s TicWatches line, for example, has an essential mode that uses up the battery. Using just that can get you weeks of battery life. However, the statement that the watch will run on battery for weeks is not entirely true as you will have to turn off almost all other functions.
Nevertheless, we cannot rule out that this rumor about the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is true and applies to the standard configuration. If things turn out like this, Wear OS 3.0 watches could be game changers for the entire industry.
