  • Samsung announced its newest rugged tablet, the Galaxy Active Tab 3.
  • It has a shock-proof case with IP68 water resistance and a replaceable battery.
  • If required, it can also be switched on and operated without a battery.

Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Tab Active 3 for those who work on-site or have a hard time holding onto their hardware. It’s been nearly three years since the company’s Galaxy Tab Active 2 made its debut, and the third iteration in the Slate line features some modern details and durability improvements.

At 429 grams, the Galaxy Tab Active 3 is surprisingly light considering its bulky appearance. It’s covered in a rubberized sleeve that ensures MIL-STD-810H compliance – so drops up to 1.5 meters can be cushioned – and IP68 water and dust resistance. If you think that this is not enough, a sturdy housing can also be built in, which also offers a holder for the IP68-protected S Pen.

With a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, the display of the Tab Active 3 is much denser than its predecessor. It still measures 8.0 inches from corner to corner but now uses IPS technology which should improve viewing angles a bit.

The power system is pretty smart too. The 5050 mAh battery of the Galaxy Tab Active 3 can be removed and replaced by the user and can be refilled via a conventional USB-C port or via side-mounted POGO pins. The tablet can also be switched on and operated without inserting a battery directly from a power source.

Internally, the Galaxy Tab Active 3 is a little less exciting. It is powered by a 4G capable Exynos 9810 chipset with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage with a microSD card slot. NFC also offers functionality for users who need support for mobile payments on their tablet. Wi-Fi 6 support is also included, while GPS, Glonass, Beidou, and Galileo access also make the cut. This means that whenever you are caving with your tab, you will likely always know where you are on the planet.

For imaging, the Galaxy Tab Active 3 has a 13-megapixel rear snapper with autofocus and a 5-megapixel selfie camera. There’s AR support too, while the camera doubles as a barcode scanner for retail workers.

The tablet will start with Android 10, but we assume that Samsung will update the Slate to Android 11 as soon as it becomes available.

There’s no word on pricing yet, but Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy Tab Active 3 will be launched in Europe and Asia for the time being.
