It seems that the Tokyo Olympics are finally happening later this year. In honor of the games, Samsung is launching a unique Galaxy S21 5G model.
Called the Olympic Games Edition (h / t Android headlines) the updated Galaxy S21 5G packs the same internals with a different coat of paint. The exterior is a much deeper purple color bordered by gold trim. Also on the back are the usual five Olympic rings and a Docomo logo – the Japanese operator who sells the phone.
Since this is a standard Galaxy S21 5G, there is nothing out of the ordinary in terms of specs. It contains a 6.2-inch AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon 888 SoC, and a triple camera array on the back. Buyers also get 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of internal storage, and a 4,000 mAh battery.
Samsung is no stranger to commemorative and limited edition phones. The Galaxy Note 10 Plus Star Wars Special Edition comes to mind. The S20 Plus also saw an ultra-pink version in the form of the BTS Edition.
In particular, the S20 Plus was originally planned to commemorate the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The scheduled ones were canceled when the games were delayed last year.
Although the games are supposed to start in July, the Galaxy S21 5G Olympic Edition is coming “after early June”. There is no price associated with the announcement. Even if you wanted one, the phone will likely see a Japan-restricted version. However, we wouldn’t mind seeing dark purple color appear on more Samsung smartphones in the future.
