TL; DR
- There will be no more updates for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 in the future.
- Samsung rolled out its last security patch for the phone in August 2021.
- The phone received updates for a total of four years.
The last security patch for the Galaxy Note 8 was rolled out in August 2021. Less than a year earlier, Samsung switched the Note 8 from monthly security patches to quarterly patches. We knew the device would only stay on the quarterly update list for about a year, so this should come as little surprise to those following Samsung’s update schedule closely. And if you’re curious, the last major software update the device received was Android 9 Pie, which was launched back in February 2018.
Corresponding Android police, Samsung has stopped supporting the Galaxy Tab A (2017) in addition to the Note 8.
Samsung has been updating the Galaxy Note 8 longer than Google has kept any Pixel smartphone up to date.
The Galaxy Note 8 was released in 2017, which means it has received software updates for a total of four years. That’s about as good as you can get in the Android world. Even Google – you know, the company that develops it Android – only keeps its Pixel phones updated for three years. Your Pixel phone may get software updates faster, but Samsung will keep your phone updated for a longer period of time.
The Galaxy Note 8 was an important device for Samsung. It was the first major Note release after the terrible, not good, very bad Galaxy Note 7 situation. Its explosion-free lifespan has helped correct many of the mistakes made by its predecessor.
Well, in 2021, it looks like Samsung is planning to end the Note series in place of a bigger, more powerful Galaxy S22 smartphone. You can read all of this right here.
