TL; DR
- A new report claims that Samsung is increasing its capacity to make Samsung foldable displays for smartphones.
- According to the report, the company is expanding its display manufacturing facility in Vietnam later this year.
- The need for more displays is driven by the high demand for foldable phones.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 have just hit the market. However, the company is apparently not waiting to see whether sales will be successful. Instead, it is reportedly about the future production of foldable smartphones. A new report from The Korean Business Newspaper claims Samsung Display is preparing for a major factory expansion to significantly increase flexible display production.
The story goes that Samsung’s Bac Ninh, Vietnam display factory will begin expanding later this year, which is expected to be completed in late 2021 or early 2022, 25 million units per year, or about 47%. The report claims that 10 million of these displays will be for future Galaxy Z Fold phones, while the other 15 million units will be for the smaller Galaxy Z Flip phones.

The story also reports that pre-orders for the two newest foldable phones in its native South Korea have already generated 920,000 pre-sales. It is also alleged that pre-orders in China have exceeded one million units. For comparison, the flawed original Galaxy Fold only sold 500,000 units worldwide, while the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip phones combined sold just 1.5 million units. The article claims that Samsung has already made 3 million combined units of its two latest foldable phones in the first two months of production.
If Samsung actually manages to make the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 big hits, you can bet that their competition will give foldable phones a higher priority as well. That should also result in Samsung Display receiving larger orders from third party phones as well.
