Samsung could make a weighty cut to the Galaxy S22’s battery
Robert Triggs / Android Authority
TL; DR
- The Samsung Galaxy S22 could have a much smaller battery than its predecessor.
- Its battery capacity could be lower than most existing Android flagships.
All of the Samsung Galaxy S series flagships for the past two years have packed at least one 4,000 mAh battery. Previously, the Galaxy S10 series started with a capacity of only 3,400 mAh. With smartphone OEMs aiming for longer battery life on their flagships, Samsung seems to be shifting into reverse.
According to information shared by people about at. were obtained GalaxyClub, the vanilla model Samsung Galaxy S22 could end up with a nominal battery capacity of only 3,590 mAh. This means that the typical, advertised battery size should be around 3,700 mAh. In comparison, the base model of the Galaxy S21 has a nominal battery capacity of 3,880 mAh and an advertised capacity of 4,000 mAh.
The publication cites the battery model number – EB-BS901ABY – as the source for this information. The serial number corresponds to the model number – SM-S901 – which apparently belongs to the Galaxy S22.

In the meantime, the S22 may not be the only model to receive a battery downgrade in the next year. According to previous rumors, the Galaxy S22 Plus could also have a smaller 4,600 mAh battery, as opposed to the 4,800 mAh capacity of the Galaxy S21 Plus. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is estimated to have a 5,000 mAh battery, just like the current Ultra model. It’s worth noting that the Galaxy S22 used to come with a 3,800 mAh battery.
However, Samsung could compensate for the reduced battery size of the Galaxy S22 by using more energy-efficient components. For example, the power consumption of the display can be reduced by using the trademarked Eco2OLED display of the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It promises energy savings of up to 25%. The new Galaxy S22 series SoCs could also make a significant difference in the power consumption of the phones. However, these are just guesswork at the moment as we don’t know what Samsung or chipset maker Qualcomm has in store.
We hope Samsung will make up for the smaller battery on the Galaxy S22 with faster charging. The Galaxy S21 series hits the top with 25W speeds. As more companies offer faster wired charging, all Samsung Galaxy S22 series phones should offer at least 45W speeds.
