Samsung could bring 576MP image sensors to market by 2025

Samsung has spearheaded the megapixel wars of recent times and just introduced a new 200 MP camera just a few days ago. But it doesn’t want to stop there. Last year the company announced plans to launch 600 MP cameras. According to a leaked conference slide (h / t Image sensors world) that the reality may only be a few years away.
According to a slide presented by Samsung’s Senior Automotive Sensor VP Haechang Lee at the SEMI Europe Summit, Samsung plans to launch 576MP sensors by 2025. The intricacies of this sensor are still unknown, but Samsung previously had 500MP as the estimated equivalent resolution of the human eye.
Before getting excited about a 600 MP sensor in your future flagship, Samsung had previously addressed large sensors for use in automotive applications, virtual reality and drones. Of course, that doesn’t mean that we won’t see large megapixel cameras on smartphones in the future. The company’s 200-megapixel HP1 sensor seemed like a far-fetched concept just a few years ago.

To that end, Samsung has already started addressing the challenges of having a large image sensor on smartphones, from reducing camera shock to reducing the physical footprint of the sensor. But with a sensor that takes this level of detail into account, computing power could be the next big hurdle.
Anyway, we’re roughly four years away from hitting Samsung’s first 576MP camera sensor, whatever its application. It remains to be seen whether the company can meet this planned deadline.
