Samsung confirms it’s working on a ‘slimmer and lighter’ foldable phone

- Samsung has confirmed that it is working on a leaner and lighter leaflet.
- The device in question could be the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
After a shaky start last year, Samsung has managed to dominate the foldable phone segment with its Z Flip range and Galaxy Fold devices. We’ve already heard rumors about the company’s foldable deals in 2021, and now Samsung has confirmed an important detail.
Samsung noted at the company’s 2020 investor forum (h / t: The Elec above SamMobile) that it is working on a new foldable phone with a “slimmer and lighter design”. However, the company didn’t say that this new phone would be the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and an associated graphic includes both the Z Flip and Fold lines. Check it out below.
Still, it stands to reason that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the slimmer and lighter device, as the Z Flip wasn’t exactly thick and powerful. Meanwhile, our own Eric Zeman criticized the Galaxy Z Fold 2 for its bulk, saying it was a “massive brick”.
In particular, the Z Fold 2 weighs 282 grams compared to the 208 grams of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra – a significant difference. So it would make sense for Samsung to add a sleeker and lighter design to the Z Fold range.
Samsung’s graphic also hints at the upcoming “differentiated technology” for foldable packaging, although we’re not entirely sure what to expect in that regard. However, one persistent rumor from the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is that it might grab an S-Pen. This form of input would require the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to have a harder screen too, which would be a bonus even if you weren’t into the S-Pen.
It’s also interesting to see that Samsung intends to make foldables a “mainstream product,” which suggests we can expect lower prices in 2021.
