Samsung and OnePlus should offer ‘Mini’ flagships
We are firmly in the age of large smartphones with large displays and there are not many compact device options for Android fans anymore. Yes, we now have devices with big screens and massive batteries, but some users just want a phone that is convenient to use.
Even for Android users, the iPhone 12 Mini was a breath of fresh air. And with the rumored early launches of the OnePlus 9 line and the Samsung Galaxy S30 series, we asked Android Authority Readers in two recent surveys on whether every company should bring their own mini-variants on the market. Here’s what you told us:
Would you like to see a Galaxy S30 Mini?
Two surveys, two manufacturers and two completely different opinions. Let’s talk about the latter first. The poll results are as one-sided as you will see Android Authority. 88.3% of voters would like Samsung to launch a Galaxy S30 Mini or equivalent compact flagship. Only 11.7% of users are against this idea.

It wouldn’t be new territory for Samsung either. The company has already launched mini flagships – do you remember the Galaxy S5 Mini? More recently, the Galaxy S10e has proven that compact flagships can coexist with larger devices. We loved the Galaxy S10e, but a phone that should be easy to sell had the lowest demand in the S10 range. It’s arguably a main reason we didn’t see a Galaxy S20e, and probably why the Galaxy S20 FE took its place instead.
Should there be a small OnePlus 9?
Samsung’s skepticism is exceeded by voters in our OnePlus 9 poll. Unlike Samsung fans who are convinced that the company should introduce a Galaxy S30 Mini, readers are hesitant about a OnePlus 9 Mini. 51% of voters believe there should be a small OnePlus 9 variant, with 49% voting against. Although it’s a lot closer than the Samsung poll, it’s still a small form factor vote.
We should remember that smaller phones have their drawbacks. Due to the dimensions, manufacturers would either have to use a smaller battery or increase the thickness of the phone to compensate for this. Our readers believe that battery life is the only problem with smaller phones, and even Redmi agrees with that.
Still, the Mini offers more options to potential iPhone 12 buyers. With screen sizes ranging from 6.68 “to 5.4”, there is an option for almost every user. It is this diversity that some Android device lines sorely miss, and you tend to agree.

- bjrg: Small phone is a possibility now that Apple developed one.
- Dahlia Samar: You take a look at battery life, which I think is the single most important factor to consider when making or buying a phone as small as the 12 mini. I am currently using the s10e and the battery life is poor and this does not come from a “power user” point of view.
- Lucible: I’m an S10e user and I honestly don’t know what to buy next. I want a small, fairly high-quality device (small hands and I want to be able to operate a phone with one hand when needed) but I’m not interested in migrating back to the Apple ecosystem. An S30e would be ideal.
- pda96: Samsung lacks a 5.8-inch cell phone in its lineup. Not everyone wants a huge phone.
- DrcspyNz: Sony made the mini phones a long time ago and they were very good. Another stupid marketing decision when they stopped making.
