RuPaul’s Drag Race star D.J. ‘Shangela’ Pierce is obsessed with Instagram
D.J. “Shangela” Pierce competed three times in the popular RuPaul’s Drag Race reality show. But in April, Shangela went into business for herself with the new show “We are here on HBO”. She follows along with drag race queens Eureka O’Hara and Bob the Drag Queen as they travel across the United States to small towns to connect with people who have strange or queer neighboring stories. During an interview in CNET’s new podcast “I’m so obsessed”, Shangela spoke about both the fun she had “We are here (spoiler: there is a lot of glitter) and the inspiration she received from the people who loved her met.
“We come to these cities and not only connect with people, we also need to build trust in them and get them into trouble for the first time in their lives,” said Shangela. “Sometimes there are places where you don’t think there is support for the LGBTQ community.”
We are here partly reality show, partly social experiment, partly drag revue. The first season with six episodes was completed in early June and can now be streamed on HBO and HBO Max. Earlier this month we were extended here for a second season.
My interview with Shangela was recorded in early April. In it we discuss how she starred with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in the film A Star Is Born, the origin of their slogan “Halleloo!” and what it’s like to appear in 184 drag shows as part of the Werq the World Tour with Drag Race stars.
Listen to my entire conversation with Shangela and subscribe to I’m So Obsessed in your favorite podcast app. In each episode, we meet an artist, actor, or creator to learn more about his work, career, and current obsession.
