- Royole launched the FlexPai 2 foldable phone.
- It gets an improved display, a Snapdragon 865 chipset and Android 10.
- The phone also has a quad camera configuration.
The world’s first foldable smartphone – the Royole FlexPai – has just received a successor. The Chinese display manufacturer Royole has launched the FlexPai 2 with a 180-degree folding display, a Snapdragon 865 chipset and Android 10.
The phone doesn’t look much different from the first FlexPai, but it has Royole’s third generation Cicada Wing display. The company claims the new flexible display can withstand more than 1.8 million bends. It also promises improvements in brightness, contrast, and response time compared to the OG FlexPai’s second generation Cicada Wing display.
When extended, the display of the Royole FlexPai 2 measures 7.8 inches and the main screen is 5.5 inches. The other side of the display when folded is called the secondary display and measures 5.4 inches. In tablet mode, the display of the FlexPai 2 has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,440. Once you fold it in half, the primary screen has a resolution of 1,440 x 900 while the secondary screen has a resolution of 1,440 x 810. In contrast to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, the phone can be folded outwards.

The previous Royole FlexPai also had a third display in the back, but it looks like the company gave a pass this time around. Instead, when folding the phone, users can touch the Samsung-style edge panel and quickly open preset apps.
In terms of size, the FlexPai 2 is more powerful than its predecessor at 339 g. That’s a lot of weight to bear. On the other hand, even the Galaxy Z Fold 2 weighs 282 g, which is only 50 g less than the FlexPai 2. Unfortunately, this is one of the disadvantages you have to live with if you want to have a tablet in your pocket.
The camera system of the FlexPai 2 will also be updated this time. The phone has a 64-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor, an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor and a 32-megapixel camera for portraits. The main camera setup doubles for selfies too.
Elsewhere, the FlexPai 2 has a 4,450 mAh battery that charges 18 W via a USB-C port. It comes with 8GB / 12GB RAM options and 256GB / 512GB storage. The color options include Sunrise Gold, Cosmic Gray and Midnight Black.
In terms of price, the Royole FlexPai 2 is almost $ 500 cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 for $ 2,000. It costs 9,988 yuan (~ $ 1,471) but is still only available in China. Last year Royole sold a development version of the first FlexPai worldwide, but we’re not sure if the FlexPai 2 should be launched in global markets.
