TL; DR
- According to a report, Xiaomi is now the top smartphone brand in Europe.
- The news comes after multiple Q2 2021 reports found it was number two for the brand worldwide.
Xiaomi enjoyed a ton of momentum in 2021 when it ranked Apple second in global shipments and achieved impressive annual growth. The good news doesn’t stop there, however, as a European market share report revealed that the Chinese brand is now number one in Europe.
The tracking company Strategy Analytics reports that Xiaomi took the top spot in Europe with 12.7 million units shipped or 25.3% market share in the second quarter of 2021. Second-placed Samsung was only just behind with 12 million units shipped or 24% market share. It is also interesting that Xiaomi achieved an annual growth of 67%, while Samsung saw a decrease of 7% compared to the previous year.
Apple is now in third place with 9.6 million units shipped and a 19.2% market share. It also achieved 15.7% growth compared to the second quarter of 2020.
Meanwhile, Oppo (5.6%) and Realme (3.8%) took fourth and fifth place respectively. Both brands are in the midst of a European expansion, with Oppo growing 180% annually and Realme growing an astonishing 1,800% annually.
Realme first entered the European region in 2019 and focused on countries like Spain. But it has since expanded significantly to cover France, Italy, the UK, Russia, and more in 2020. So what we are essentially seeing is growth from practically nothing. It will therefore be interesting to see what kind of growth Realme can sustain once it becomes a more established name.
