It looks like the WhatsApp team is currently working hard on several features. Multiple device and fingerprint support for WhatsApp Web is reportedly in the works.
Now more frequent leak WABetaInfo revealed that the WhatsApp team is working on a media leakage feature that is similar to Snapchat’s self-erasing media. The tipster reports that after you select a photo, video, or GIF to send to a contact, you can tap a new icon to make it expire. Check out the screenshots below.
There does not appear to be a timer assigned to the “Media expiring” function WABetaInfo says that the content will simply disappear from the recipient’s phone when they leave the chat (it is unclear whether it relates to the sender or the recipient leaving the chat).
Additionally, the tipster says there is no message letting users know that the content has expired – it’s just like the content wasn’t sent at all.
There’s no word on whether WhatsApp has screenshot detection capabilities in the event that recipients try to capture the media in question. We’ve already seen Snapchat offer this functionality and notify senders when screenshots are taken.
Unfortunately, there is no schedule for the “Expiring Media” function for WhatsApp. It could very well be a year from now, and it will be months before dark mode and fingerprint authentication finally appear in the app after their first discovery.
