Report: Samsung manufacturing Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 chipset

Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 in hand

  • Samsung reportedly makes the Snapdragon 875 processor.
  • The new chipset will be based on a 5 nm process.

Qualcomm usually unveils its flagship next-generation silicon in December. We expect the newest chipset (SM8350) to be called Snapdragon 875.

Taiwan’s TSMC has largely made the last generations of Qualcomm’s flagship processors, however Business korea and Hankyung report that the Snapdragon 875 is now manufactured by Samsung Electronics.

In the previous release it was pointed out that the Snapdragon 875 is made in a 5nm process, which is a smaller size than the current generation Snapdragon 865 series. Apple, Huawei, MediaTek, and Samsung are also expected to adopt 5nm designs for their flagship processors.

Business korea reports that the contract to manufacture the new Qualcomm silicon is valued at $ 1 billion and that the new chipset is in mass production. The Samsung Galaxy S30 series, as well as phones from Xiaomi and Oppo, will use the new processor, something that goes without saying for flagship Snapdragon hardware in general.

This wouldn’t be the first time Samsung has produced a Snapdragon flagship chipset, as the Snapdragon 820 from 2016 was previously made. Still, if this were confirmed, it would be a huge win for Samsung.

We’ll have to wait for more Snapdragon 875 leaks and the official reveal for more information. However, we expect the chipset to be equipped with Arm’s Cortex-X1 and Cortex-A78 CPU cores as well as the Snapdragon X60 5G modem.
