Redmi K40 could be rebranded for global Poco release
- According to the model number and IMDA listing, Poco could rename the Redmi K40 for its own version.
- This would be yet another time Poco renamed a Redmi device instead of releasing its own.
- Poco announced that it would become an “independent brand” in 2020, although it has only released a few unique phones since then.
In January 2020, the Xiaomi subsidiary Poco announced that it would become an independent brand. This was a welcome announcement as the brand was shaky after the release of their hugely popular Poco F1 phone.
Since that announcement, however, the so-called independent company has gotten into the habit of rebrands of Redmi devices. Redmi is another subsidiary of Xiaomi. It’s not clear how that equals independence.
Regardless, the evidence strongly suggests (via XDA developer) that at least one phone from the recently announced Redmi K40 series could soon end up as a Poco device worldwide. This would follow the Poco F2 Pro, Poco X2, and Poco M2 Pro, which were all reformatted Redmi phones.

Evidence for a Poco branded K40 phone comes from the device certification organization IMDA in Singapore. It shows a Poco branded phone with specifications identical to those of the Redmi K40. It also has a model number (M2012K11AG) that is identical to the Redmi phone except for the last letter, which ranges from “C” to “G”. We assume that the “C” stands for “China” and the “G” for “Global”.
While there is nothing wrong with renaming Poco phones for global markets, it seems silly to take on a big independence task when it really isn’t in practice. Either way, if you are looking to buy the latest Poco branded phone soon, the Redmi K40 is probably the one for you.
