  • A Redmi manager has hinted at a K30 Ultra successor powered by a MediaTek flagship chipset.
  • MediaTek is hosting a flagship chipset on January 20th.

Xiaomi launched the Redmi K30 Ultra last year. It mainly differed from the K30 Pro by swapping out the Snapdragon 865 processor for the less powerful, but still powerful MediaTek Dimensity 1000 Plus flagship SoC.

Now Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing Weibo has indicated that a K30 Ultra successor is on the way. Specifically, the executive says the K30 Ultra is reaching end-of-life status, adding that a new MediaTek flagship chipset is arriving. Take a look at the screenshot below.

It is worth noting that the Xiaomi sub-brand has already confirmed that the Redmi K40 series will be launched. It will start at 2,999 yuan (~ $ 463) and feature Snapdragon 888 performance. This apparent Redmi device with MediaTek technology is likely not a K40 or K40 Pro, it could be another K40 series device or an entirely new entry.

There’s no word on what to expect from a Redmi K40 Ultra (or whatever it’s called), but we do know that the K30 Ultra was significantly cheaper than the K30 Pro. The Ultra model had an introductory price of 1,999 yuan (~ $ 288 then) in China, compared to the Redmi K30 Pro’s introductory price of 2,999 yuan (~ $ 430 then) in its home market.

As for the new flagship chipset, a recent leak from tipster Digital Chat Station points to an upcoming MediaTek processor with a three-tier CPU layout (one Cortex-A78 at 3 GHz, three Cortex-A78 at 2.6 GHz and four Cortex-A). A55 at 2 GHz), a Mali-G78 MC9 GPU, and a 6 nm manufacturing process.

We therefore expect a less powerful experience on paper than the new Snapdragon 888, which includes a beefy Cortex-X1 CPU core and a significantly improved GPU. MediaTek will start on January 20th, so all will be officially announced.

However, we hope that this future handset will actually hit the market outside of China as the Redmi K30 Ultra was limited to its home market. What would you like to see from a Redmi K40 Ultra? Let us know by taking the survey above!
