Update, May 4, 2021 (2:48 p.m. ET): It looks like Reddit isn’t available right now for many around the world. According to Down Detector, outages have been reported in the last half hour. Hopefully the page will be back up soon so you can read the latest memes.
Original article: If you’re trying to cast a few positive votes or measure something against a banana, you might be disappointed to find that Reddit isn’t working. It’s something that rarely happens so this could be a shock. Failure is often the cause of this, but it can also be a problem with the app on your phone. Here’s a quick guide to troubleshooting any issues you may have with Reddit.
Is reddit down for you?
- Check to see if Reddit is down for everyone
- Check your internet connection
- Make sure there are no problems with the app
- Reboot your phone
- Report any problems you have
1. Has Reddit been down?
If Reddit is the only app or site that doesn’t work for you, chances are it won’t work for others either. Make sure this is not a failure before following the steps below.
Down Detector is a good tool. You can search for Reddit on the site or go straight to the Reddit page. You’ll see a notice that says “Potential Problems with Reddit” or “Problems with Reddit” if the problem is widespread. You can also report problems.
Reddit will also keep you updated on the site’s status. Head over to Reddit Status for information on everything that helps make it work. You can also tap the “Subscribe for Updates” button in the top right corner to be notified in case something goes wrong.
2. Check your internet connection

If the Reddit app or website doesn’t load, make sure there is nothing wrong with your internet connection. You may have problems with your home Wi-Fi connection or your cellular data plan. You can check if the connection is the problem simply by opening another site on your PC or phone browser. If nothing loads, your internet is down.
Go to the Quick Settings drop-down list on your phone and turn off and turn on the data connection. Make sure you are in an area with good network signal. If the data connection is still lost, you need to contact your network operator.
If there is a problem with your wireless router, a restart is usually sufficient. If that doesn’t work, we have a handy troubleshooting guide that you should read.
3. Make sure there are no app issues
If the status checkers show that there are no issues with Reddit and your internet connection is fine, you may be experiencing some app issues. Try to force close the app and restart it. If that doesn’t work, the best way to do this is to uninstall and reinstall the app from the Google Play Store. Also, make sure the Reddit app is updated to the latest version.
4. Restart your phone
As with many technical problems, the easiest and most effective solution is to restart the device. The same idea works here too. Restart your phone or laptop and see if the problem is resolved.
5. Report any problems you are having
If you’ve tried everything on the list and Reddit still doesn’t work, you can report the bug or problem directly to the developers. Go to r / bugs and mention the problem you are facing with the website or phone app. In addition, a list of bug fixes, updates and known problems with the mobile apps is displayed in r / redditmobile.
