Realme 8 5G announced: Taking the fight to the Redmi Note 10 5G

- Realme launched the Realme 8 5G in India.
- It’s the same price as the 4G model but makes a couple of cuts.
Realme launched the Realme 8 series earlier this year, with the standard Realme 8 and Pro each being 4G models. What if you want next generation connectivity on a budget? This is where the newly announced Realme 8 5G comes into play.
The BBK-owned brand is going the same route as Xiaomi with the Redmi Note 10 5G, as the Realme 8 5G is essentially trading in some of the features of the 4G model for super-fast connectivity.
That said, you’ve got a phone with a much more modest camera setting than the Realme 8 for starters. The new phone ditched the ultra-wide-angle lens and 64-megapixel main camera of the 4G model in favor of a 48-megapixel main camera and a pair of 2 megapixel sensors (macro and monochrome). Fortunately, you still have a 16-megapixel camera for selfies in a left-flush hole cutout.

Other notable downgrades of the Realme 8 include the switch from an OLED screen to an LCD panel (albeit with an update to the refresh rate to 90 Hz) and wired charging of 18 W (from 30 W). We’re also seeing a switch from a built-in fingerprint sensor to a side-mount scanner, though this could be an upgrade for many consumers.
Otherwise, the Realme 8 5G has a Dimensity 700 5G SoC, 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM (with the option of using storage space as virtual RAM), 128 GB of expandable storage and a 5,000 mAh battery. With the exception of the chipset, this largely corresponds to the 4G variant.
Realme’s new 5G device is on sale in India at a starting price of Rs 14,999 (~ $ 200) for the 4GB / 128GB model, which is the same as the starting price of the Realme 8. Expect Rs 16,999 (~ $ 226) for the 8GB / 128GB option. Initial sales begin April 28th and the phone will be available in Supersonic Black and Supersonic Blue options.
