Readers can’t make up their minds about Nothing

Carl Pei’s newest company, Nothing, is about to launch its first product in the form of the Earphones 1. While this prospect and the weight behind the company might excite some, others may not really care about the young company or its promised goods.

To measure the temperature in the room, we asked our readers in a recent survey whether nothing is important to them. That’s how you answered.

We carried out this survey on our social media channels and on our website. A sizeable portion (39.5%) of the ~ 1,300 respondents admit that they don’t care. 29.3% of voters say they care about the company, while 31.2% think it might. The latter group is waiting to see the company’s products before deciding which side to side.

On Twitter, Readers were much more hesitant. A smaller proportion (37.9%) say that they don’t care, but 39.7% of the respondents answered “maybe”. Only 22.3% of the ~ 2,200 voters on Twitter are interested in the company and its prospects.

There are many reasons to believe that nothing will be someone in the tech world. As a OnePlus co-founder, Pei is no stranger to successful companies, and it is clear that Nothing is ready to offer reasonable prices for its products. Building on the ashes of Essential, the company could eventually expand into other products beyond audio.

Conversely, it’s broadly another company with a marketing budget right now. It will be difficult for a niche player to break through the crowded and competitive true wireless earbuds market in one of the big business leaders. Granted, nothing has bigger plans, but those seem to be a while away.

  • Wongwatt: At the risk of the usual ridicule in saying this, nothing brings a pointless pair of buds into a market dominated by seasoned veterans (and Apple), and that shows a complete lack of direction for this new venture. It’s a desperate move from a man who left (or was ousted from) a company that changed direction around him and shows no invention or innovation at all. And transparent? “Really?” Are we back in the 90s?
  • Albin: Nestle makes a candy bar called Aero, which is roughly the same size and price as others, but is full of air holes so only about half of it is in and is sold as a delicious, bubbly “experience”. It remains to be seen whether nothing is the aero of technology.
  • Binoy Mathew: No, I don’t care. I will always be a rebel.
  • David Olmedo: You’ve been teasing your new product for so long, so my expectations are very high.
  • Mayank M: All I know is that Carl Pei is a hype machine. He knows hype to make the product, no matter if the product is good or bad. He did that in OnePlus. Also, I like the name and would love to see what other products they make.
