Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx successor packs eight high-power cores
- Details of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx successor appear to have been leaked.
- The chip, which was tested in two configurations, could have two banks of power cores.
Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 8cx chipset in 2018, signaling its intention to enter the arm-based laptop race. Now the news of a full-blown successor has leaked.
Details collected by WinFuture suggest Qualcomm is working on at least two variants of the series of chips known internally as the SC8280. Both stick with the arm-based technology, but can offer different levels of performance.
In particular, Qualcomm should also omit energy-saving cores from these chipsets. Instead of equipping the chipsets with power and energy-saving cores, Qualcomm is allegedly aiming for a full power supply. This means that each CPU cluster is equipped with high-performance cores that are clocked at different speeds.

WinFuture suggests that the SC8280XP – apparently the livelier of the two chipsets – will contain four high-end cores running at 2.43 GHz and four cores from the “Gold +” series running at 2.7 GHz. Interestingly, some samples also reportedly have 3 GHz clocks, so this number may be tweaked to suit a device’s cooling performance and use case. The samples also have displays with a size of up to 14 inches and RAM values of 32 GB. This suggests that Qualcomm is targeting the high-performance ultrabook market.
A comprehensive, performance-oriented design would have a clear benefit for performance-critical workloads. However, it remains to be seen how this will affect the chip’s thermal management and power hunger. It would be a significant departure from the Snapdragon 8cx’s design, but it could give Qualcomm some boastful rights in the arm-computing race.
