Poco confirms true Poco F1 successor is coming, addresses rebranding
- A Poco manager has apparently claimed that a real Poco F1 successor is on the way.
- The representative also responded to criticism of the brand’s rebranding strategy.
- According to reports, Poco will continue to offer renamed devices in the future.
The Poco F2 Pro is one of the cheapest flagships in 2020 and is only offered in China as a renamed version of the Redmi K30 Pro. Even so, we thought it made the right tradeoffs for the price.
However, the $ 500 price tag means that the Poco F2 Pro is significantly more expensive than the $ 300 Poco F1 launched in 2018. This has now been confirmed by Poco country director Anuj Sharma The Indian Express that the Poco F2 Pro is not coming to India.
In addition, the Poco manager said that a real successor to the Poco F1 is actually coming:
The Poco F1 was a device that changed the market and consumers expect the same from the successor. The Poco F2 Pro is not that device. We are working to find a real successor to the Poco F1, but it will be some time before we develop it.
The quote suggests we might see a Poco F1 successor with a similarly disruptive price tag as the original Pocophone. However, pricing could be more challenging than ever, as the prices of flagship phones have soared in 2020. This is mainly due to the high cost of 5G and the price of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 silicon. We’ve also seen the rise of multi-camera setups adding up even more dollars on the bill of materials.
This means it is theoretically possible that a full-blown Poco F1 successor will hit the market in 2021, if 5G costs are expected to drop somewhat. We don’t expect a huge price hike for the upcoming Snapdragon 875 either, while some leaks indicate the existence of a lite version of the flagship chipset. Companies like Google and Apple have also shipped value-for-money devices with a single rear camera, which shows that a phone with three or four cameras isn’t essential.
Addressing the rebranding strategy
Sharma also reportedly responded to criticism of Poco’s rebranding strategy as most of its phones released in 2020 have been renamed Redmi phones with the Poco launcher. The management felt that these renamed phones are better versions of their Redmi counterparts and are better value for money. He also noted that Poco is a new brand and that creating brand new phones is a huge challenge for every segment.
“The first OnePlus phone – OnePlus One – was a renamed Oppo device, and it was similar with Realme’s first phone (sic). Brands often tend to follow this strategy and this is nothing new in Poco’s case, ”Sharma was quoted as saying.
Indeed the Poco Country Director said The Indian Express that it will continue to pursue this strategy in the future and had no plans to develop its own software platform instead of MIUI.
