- Sony PlayStation 5 sales set a new record in the US for devices sold in the first five months.
- This news is from the respected retail analyst NPD. No specific sales figures were disclosed.
- Despite millions of consoles sold, there are still plenty of people who want to buy it but simply can’t find any.
The Sony PlayStation 5 is probably one of the hottest products out there right now. In late 2020, the console was so hard to come by that an entire black market industry began where scalpers could easily sell one for four times its list price.
With that in mind, it should come as no surprise to hear that PlayStation 5 sales have just hit a new record. According to this twitter thread by a well-known NPD analyst (h / t ArsTechnica) In its first five months, Sony moved more PS5 devices in the US than any other console in history. This new record goes along with it a previous recordThis made the PS5 the fastest-selling console in terms of total sales in US dollars.

NPD doesn’t usually post hard numbers, and it doesn’t here. However, Nintendo said it had sold 4.8 million units of its Switch console in “America” in the first 10 months. Hence, we can extrapolate that Sony almost certainly sold millions of PS5s.
In other words, the PlayStation 5 is selling like gangbusters. Of course, that probably doesn’t mean much to the hundreds or maybe even thousands of readers who are willing to buy a PlayStation 5 but simply can’t find any.
With ongoing global chip scarcity, as well as a suspected artificial scarcity marketing plan on the part of Sony, buying a PlayStation 5 at list price is still incredibly difficult.
However, it will be interesting to see the final balance of the PlayStation 5 sales years over the next few years. Could this lead to the PlayStation 2 becoming the best-selling console of all time?
