TL; DR

  • Sony has announced that registrations for the beta test program for PlayStation 5 are now open.
  • PS5 owners who sign up for the trial will be able to test new software features and provide feedback before they are released.
  • It is not yet known when the first software beta will be available for selected testers.

Do you want to be part of the cool kids club? You’re lucky. Sony has just announced that it will launch a PlayStation 5 beta program for its software. Registrations for the program are now open to PS5 game console owners 18 and over from the USA, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, Germany and France.

The program is designed to provide feedback on new software features that Sony is planning to add to the PS5. When Sony enrolls you in the program, an email will be sent with instructions on how to download the beta software for PlayStation 5. Your name will also be saved for future PS5 beta tests. Once the test begins, owners can revert to their standard PS5 software version before the test ends.

There’s no word on how many PS5 owners will be selected for the software beta test and when the test will actually begin. There is also no word on what new features will be included in this beta. The last major PS5 update includes support for external USB storage devices.

Of course, the older PlayStation 4 console had its own software beta program. Additionally, Microsoft has allowed Xbox console owners to test new features and updates in beta for years. It will be interesting to see if Sony PS5 owners still have the opportunity to try out new features beyond this initial software test.
