Pixel 6 Pro photo and video samples leak via a very unlikely source
TL; DR
- A YouTuber received photo and video samples from the Pixel 6 Pro.
- The samples are from a source in Nigeria, but Google has never launched Pixels in Africa.
We’ve seen a number of Pixel 6 series details over the past few months, largely due to Google itself. But the upcoming flagships have also been the subject of many leaks, and we have another major leak today.
YouTuber M Brandon Lee of This is Tech Today received a video of the Pixel 6 Pro showing a subtly curved screen through a source in Nigeria (skip 1:57). Lee’s source was also able to offer a variety of pictures (4:46) and a couple of videos captured with the Pixel 6 Pro itself.
However, it’s worth noting that the camera app appears to be preproduction software that lacks a host of previously leaked features. Therefore, we would expect more modes and improved image quality in commercial devices.
What about the picture quality?
Apart from the pre-production of the software, assessing the image quality using a video is also a bit of a challenge. Nevertheless, the images seem to show a large dynamic range, good resolution of detail and colors that do not seem to go the over-saturated path.
Metadata from the 1X photos also shows that the images are 12.5 MP. This happens to be the pixel-binned resolution of a 50MP sensor. We also get confirmation of an aperture of f / 1.85 for the primary shooter. Otherwise, Lee points out that the ultra-wide camera’s metadata indicates an aperture of f / 2.2 and a resolution of 12.5MP.
The source also shared 1080p / 60fps video samples with the YouTuber, but those clips don’t seem anything special compared to previous Pixels.
And the fact that this leak is from Nigeria? We suspect Lee went to great lengths to protect the source, as the leaker is linked to either Google or a carrier partner (rather than an enthusiast who somehow bought an early device).
However, Google has never officially launched Pixel phones in the African continent, and it seems like that won’t change with the Pixel 6 series. So it stands to reason that it didn’t come from a freight forwarder employee. It’s also worth noting that I’ve seen South African Google employees with Pixel phones in the past, even though the phones weren’t officially released here.
