Pixel 5a is overheating for some users, Google investigating issue

Google only launched the Pixel 5a a few weeks ago and the mid-range player is already causing problems for some of its users. Several reviewers and testers report that the phone has overheating issues, just like the Pixel 5 did when it started.

For many, the problem seems to crop up with recording 4K video at 60 frames per second. According to people over at CNET, recording videos at the higher frame rate causes the Pixel 5a to stop recording even in a normal environment. Reviewers at Android police Their Pixel 5a units also issued a warning message after a little more than five minutes of 4K recording. The problem has also been reported by testers. verified Hot hardware who received an overheating request on their Pixel 5a device after six minutes of recording a 4K video at 60 fps and an ambient temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.

In the meantime, Android headquarters reports that taking some pictures and some short 1080p videos will slow the phone down and display the overheating warning on the Pixel 5a in less than half an hour. The publication reached out to Google and the company is investigating the matter.

Reviewers aside, some Pixel 5a users have also reported on Twitter to report the overheating issue. One of them says his phone showed an overheating warning after streaming live in 1080p for an hour while others had the problem mainly while using the phone’s camera.

Hopefully it’s a software bug and not one with the Pixel 5a’s hardware. Google is specifically investigating the camera app to find out what is causing the problem. We’ll update this article if the company replies with details of a solution or releases an update to resolve the issue.
