Oxygen OS 11 is divisive

Redesigning Oxygen OS has always been controversial. OnePlus has spent too many years playing to the strengths of its “no-load” approach so that fans of the company don’t feel a change, however subtle, that would betray what made its software successful in the first place. When the first screenshots of Oxygen OS 11 went online, OnePlus fans were understandably concerned.

Oxygen OS 11 represents a dramatic change for the company. The Oxygen OS you knew is gone. OnePlus has replaced it with something that has more in common with Samsung’s One user interface than vanilla Android. At the same time, the company introduced features that OnePlus fans have asked of the company for years.

More than 16,600 of you have voted on how you view OnePlus’ direction for Oxygen OS. How these things usually go was reflected in the comments by those who opposed the change most. Some people had positive things to say about Oxygen OS 11, but most of the comments were negative. It is then interesting that the survey was different. While most respondents (38.3%) said they preferred the old, stock-inspired OnePlus design, almost as many (36.4%) said they liked the new approach. In absolute terms, the difference was just over 300 votes.

A surprising number of respondents (25.3%) said they need to try the update before deciding how they feel about the direction of Oxygen OS. It will be interesting to see how perspectives change as people get more time with Oxygen OS 11.

Chandler Burns: OnePlus will do exactly what they vowed to destroy. first the Facebook bloatware and now this one. I have no problem adding new features and functionality and integrating with what’s already in Stock Android, but now Oxygen OS looks like an odd mix of MIUI and One UI.
DBS: This is the first smart move I’ve seen from OnePlus. Samsung’s OneUI is by far the best Android user interface, especially in today’s oversized smartphone era. OnePlus did the right thing and copied from the best.
