TL; DR

  • Oppo is adding virtual RAM support to the Reno 5 series phones.
  • The approach temporarily turns up to 7GB of storage into temporary storage when you run out of physical RAM.
  • Oppos sister brand Vivo uses this feature, but not as aggressively.

As with a similar feature for Opo’s sibling, Vivo, you can tap a settings option that gives up to 7GB of virtual memory for your phone’s storage. It’s not as fast as real RAM, but it should keep your phone from choking when juggling multiple apps or running particularly intense software. Depending on your needs, you can choose from three capacities.

The virtual memory update should now be available on at least some devices, although access may vary by region and model.

This will not give you the performance of a ROG Phone 5 or any other device with huge piles of real storage. Storage is usually much slower than RAM, and virtual storage can have problems when running certain games or other apps that need quick access. However, this should ease the pressure of buying a new phone just for the extra storage – and you could get away with a cheaper phone if you aren’t otherwise very demanding.
