Oppo made technical headlines last week when it unveiled the concept of the rollable phone X 2021 at its Inno Day 2020 event. The design features a 6.7-inch smartphone screen that extends from the side and provides a 7.4-inch display.

It’s a fascinating alternative to foldable phones, but Oppo has now said it Android Authority There are no plans to offer a commercial release in the near future.

“While no commercialization is planned in the short term, it will serve as a guide for the transformation and development of future product form factors,” the company responded to an inquiry sent by email.

“Commercialization requires market research and business justification and can take time,” added Oppo. In other words, there doesn’t seem to be any guarantee that the company will be bringing out a rollable phone in general. At the very least, Oppo could use the development of the concept phone as a reference to study other phone designs.

Oppo also confirmed Android Authority that it currently uses a “plastic surface on the screen” but that it uses a “hard cover” supposedly to improve toughness. This suggests that rollable phone screens have the same durability as foldable ones.

Still, those looking to get their hands on a commercial rollable phone may want to wait for the LG Project B device to launch. LG’s takeover of the rollable phone is believed to start in March 2021.
