  • Oppo introduced the Reno 5 series in China.
  • The smartphone trio is supported by the Reno 5 Pro Plus with a 50 megapixel Sony sensor and Snapdragon 865.
  • It will go on sale in China later this month, but there is no word on global availability.

Oppo announced the Reno 3 series almost exactly a year ago, while the fourth iteration followed not long after in mid-2020. Now the company has introduced the Reno 5 trio, which consists of the standard model, a Pro option and the Pro Plus variant with the highest range.

All three appearances are visually reminiscent of the Galaxy Note 20 series on the back, with three lenses playing a prominent role. In the front, the Reno 5 series uses a left-aligned hole-hole selfie camera.

Oppo Reno 5 Pro Plus

Despite their similar looks, the Oppo Reno 5 Pro Plus is the definitive headliner. Weighing just under 185 grams and an 8 mm thick housing, it has a 6.55-inch FHD + AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a touch sampling rate of 180 Hz. The screen is also with HDR10 + certified.

Internally, a Snapdragon 865 chipset has a maximum of 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. An 8GB / 128GB model is also offered. Both packages are powered by a 4,500 mAh battery with 65 W charging support for fast charging.

In terms of imaging, the Reno 5 Pro Plus is featured by a brand new 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor with OIS / EIS on the back. These include a 16-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 13-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 2-megapixel macro lens. The selfie camera is powered by a 32MP sensor.

For those who need to match their device to their clothing, silver-purple Starry Dream and metallic black Floating Night Shadow colors are available as options.

Oppo is also launching a limited edition model, the back of which changes color after double tapping. Check it out in the video clip above.

The Reno 5 and the Reno 5 Pro

The Reno 5 Pro has the same 6.55-inch 90Hz OLED on the front, but reduces processing and imaging performance. To move these pixels around, the phone uses a Dimensity 1000 Plus chipset with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. It is powered by a 4,350 mAh power cell with a peak charge speed of 65 W.

The Reno 5 now has a smaller 6.43-inch display, but combines a Snapdragon 765G with the same RAM and storage quota. As a smaller model, it packs a slightly smaller battery with 4,300 mAh, but also receives the 65 W charge treatment.

Both models are provided by a 64-megapixel quad rear-view camera array with a 32-megapixel selfie camera at the front.

After all, all three Oppo Reno 5 models run under Color OS 11.1 based on Android 11 from the start.

Price and availability

The Oppo Reno 5 Pro Plus is understandably the more expensive model, which hits the market in China for 3,999 yuan (~ $ 612) for the 8GB RAM / 128GB storage version. The storage version with 12 GB RAM / 256 GB costs 4,499 yuan (~ 689 US dollars).
