TL; DR

  • Oppo presents a camera event on August 19th.
  • It could be related to the new selfie technology under the display.
  • It is not clear in which phones new technologies are being used.

Smartphone maker Oppo is hosting a mysterious camera-themed event on August 19 at 8:00 a.m. UTC or 4:00 a.m. ET.

An email invitation shared by GSMArena contains only the text “The Future of Imaging, Today” and a close-up of a lens. Tasleem Arif, Oppo India’s Vice President and Head of R&D, made a promise on Twitter that “could change your camera experience forever” without giving any further details.

The event could be related to an announcement that will reveal an improved under-display selfie camera earlier this month. Regardless of the brand, such cameras often had poor photo quality due to screen interference and a lower pixel density in the space above the lens. Oppos’s solution involves a mix of hardware and AI, with the latter automatically addressing issues such as diffraction.

Since the company didn’t mention any specific products at the time, Oppo could use August 19th to showcase phones with the selfie technology. It only recently released the Find X3 Pro and Reno 6 Pro, however, so a new camera would likely have to wait a while or go into one of the company’s other lines, maybe even a non-conceptual version of its Oppo X rollable.

Oppo could of course plan to talk about primary cameras or other imaging technologies instead. Smartphone manufacturers compete against each other in a variety of arenas, such as zoom, night shots, and the number of cameras on offer. The Find X3 Pro has a total of five cameras, including a dedicated macro option.
