- Oppo apparently has a prototype of a portable and buttonless phone that supports wired charging.
- The device is also rumored to have a selfie camera under the display and electrochromic technology to hide the rear gunner.
Oppo may be working on a portable, button-free phone according to the latest digital chat station leak from Weibo tipster. In contrast to similar prototypes from Xiaomi and Vivo, which only get a wireless charging option, the Oppo version will also include wired charging.
The leaker claims that Oppo’s portless prototype has a USB interface hidden by a “special structural design” that is absolutely integrated into the phone. It sounds like Oppo could experiment with proprietary charging technology that allows wired charging without the need for an actual charging port. Maybe it’s something like Apple’s MagSafe technology that uses magnets and a built-in charging coil to charge the iPhone 12 series.
Elsewhere, the leak also reveals that Oppo’s portable phone is drilling holes and notches with a selfie camera under the display. The rear camera is believed to use electrochromic technology to hide its existence, possibly similar to the OnePlus Concept One.
Instead of physical buttons, the Oppo phone is said to have pressure-sensitive side buttons.
We don’t know if Oppo plans to publicly showcase this alleged portless prototype, as its sister brand Vivo has done with its Apex line. There is also no word on whether this device will ever go into mass production. One thing is clear, however, that smartphone OEMs are seriously considering a portless future. We may not be ready for it yet, but it’s definitely on the horizon.
