The Android 11-based Oxygen OS 11 update for the OnePlus 7 and 7T series phones was a disaster to say the least. Months after its release, OnePlus was unable to fix some nasty bugs that resulted in sluggish performance, battery drain, overheating, and other issues. This week the company finally started rolling out some much needed fixes for the phones in the form of the Oxygen OS 11.0.2.1 update. While the latest software “does not add new bugs” according to users, it does not completely fix existing issues, including an issue with HD streaming.
The changelog for the Oxygen Os 11.0.2.1 update for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T phones is as follows:
- system
- Reduced power consumption
- Improved overheating control management
- Fixed an issue where high definition videos could not be played on some video platforms.
- Updated Android security patch to 06/2021
- File manager
- Fixed application crash problem
- camera
- Fixed an issue where the camera is blurry when shooting in full screen mode.
- Improved stability
- phone
- The display effect of the keypad user interface has been optimized
While this may shed a glimmer of hope into users’ hearts, it seems that the update still hasn’t fixed all of the existing issues.
Several users on Reddit report that the update improves the user interface lag and makes the performance a little more consistent. The phone’s battery performance should also be better after the update.
However, the problem of not being able to stream HD video remains unsolved for some users. With the Oxygen OS 11 update, the OnePlus 7 and 7T devices lost the ability to stream videos in HD quality on streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. That’s because the update inexplicably downgraded the phones from Widevine DRM L1, which are required for HD streaming, to Widevine L3, which only allows SD streaming.
However, some people had managed to get HD streaming working by uninstalling and reinstalling streaming apps or by clearing the cache of affected apps. Keep in mind that if you do the latter, you could lose some saved app data.
Meanwhile, several users are upset that OnePlus is just releasing the June security patch when most phones get the July update and that Google is almost ready to roll out the August security patches.
Other persistent problems on the phones include issues with gestures and frame rate drops. However, the overall experience after the latest update seems to be significantly better than the previous versions. Unfortunately, it is not yet known when the phones will get the Always On Display feature in open beta builds.
