OnePlus and Oppo often make devices that are very similar. The latest smartphone innovations from the BBK duo are also identical. For example, the color-shifting electrochromic glass that we first saw on the OnePlus Concept One and recently on the OnePlus 8T Concept is now mass-produced for the Oppo Reno 5 Pro Plus.
OnePlus even switched its smartphone strategy to more budget models last year, making the opposition more obvious than ever.
Now the two companies seem to have further coordinated their agendas. According to an exclusive report from DoNewsThe research and development departments of OnePlus and Oppo have merged. New employees in the integrated research department will also be hired by Oppo, not OnePlus.
Oppo insiders reportedly told the release that the two companies’ research and development had essentially been merged back in December last year, but now the ink on this deal is completely dry. Oppo and OnePlus apparently belong to the Oga Group, a company that wants to promote the integration of the Oppo, Realme and OnePlus brands.
“It is similar to the relationship between Xiaomi and Redmi who use the same R&D system,” the Oppo insider said DoNews.
Elsewhere, the latest report confirms that software is not currently part of the R&D merger. Therefore, Oxygen OS and Color OS should keep their distinguishing features. Although similarities have already crept in between the two skins when you look at the improvements to Oxygen OS 11 and Color OS 11.
