OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T Android 11 release will come late in 2021

OnePlus 6T against tree
  • OnePlus confirmed that the beta program for OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T Android 11 will start at the end of August.
  • If so, it means that Android 11 won’t have a stable launch until late 2021 – or even early 2022.
  • By then, a handful of phones will likely be available on Android 12 by now.

OnePlus used to have a reputation for providing Android updates and upgrades steadily and over the long term. However, in recent years the company has lost that reputation as its software updates become slower and less frequent.

As an example of this, the company has just announced when the beta program for OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T Android 11 will start. According to this official forum post, users will be able to download a beta version of Android 11 from the end of August 2021. This is exactly at the point when we expect the stable start of Android 12.

Connected: Android 12 Features: Everything We Know

Judging by previous beta programs, it’s incredibly likely that the OnePlus 6 / 6T won’t see a stable start of Android 11 for a few months after the beta program has started. That could be anywhere from fall 2021 or even early 2022.

Admittedly, the OnePlus 6 has already received two Android upgrades: first from Android 8 Oreo to Android 9 Pie and then to Android 10. The OnePlus 6T started with Android 9 Pie, so upgrading to Android 11 would be the second full upgrade. By industry standards, the fact that these phones even see Android 12 is not the norm.

With main competitor Samsung now providing its own software updates faster than OnePlus, it’s clear that these OnePlus6 / OnePlus 6T Android 11 messages won’t earn the company any points in comparison. All of Samsung’s flagships from the past two years are already available on Android 11, and some will likely be available on Android 12 when the OnePlus 6 series gets Android 11.
