Oculus Quest 2 specs leak points to a massively upgraded VR headset

oculus quest 2 specs details vr headset leak

  • Facebook accidentally shared many details of the Oculus Quest 2.
  • The new Android VR headset will contain a much faster Snapdragon XR2 chip and display technology “2K per eye”.
  • It will also have a nifty design with an easy-to-assemble strap and new controllers.

You don’t have to wait for an official announcement to see what the sequel to Oculus Quest will look like – Facebook inadvertently shared a lot of information in advance. Street to VR reports that Facebook posted (and has since removed) Oculus Quest 2 demo videos revealing key specs, and the details suggest a vastly improved version of the standalone VR headset.

The Oculus Quest 2 will have much more powerful specs than its predecessor. The Android-based hardware runs on a Snapdragon XR2 chip with 6 GB of RAM. This is a dramatic improvement over the 2017 Snapdragon 835 and 4GB of RAM over the original. According to Facebook, this should enable more demanding games. It should be equipped with up to 256 GB of memory.

You also have a much clearer view of the virtual world. The Oculus Quest 2 offers a resolution of “almost 2 KB per eye” or more than 50 percent more pixels (and thus more visual details) than the original Quest. This could be a single large display instead of the two from the first quest, but it should still result in more intense gaming with less of the “screen door” effect you get when you see gaps between pixels.

The design seems to have been improved too, with an easier-to-assemble “soft touch strap”, new ergonomics for the touch controller and a lighter, smaller headset. It’s also expected to offer 3D audio, and out-of-the-box Oculus Link support makes the Quest 2 useful as a PC headset.

There’s no mention of pricing or availability for the Oculus Quest 2, though a briefly available Walmart listing from August suggested the Quest 2 start at $ 299 for a 64GB model and $ 399 for a 256GB version – Much lower than the starting price of $ 399 for the first search. Facebook’s virtual Connect conference is scheduled for September 16, the day one of the demo videos should premiere. So we would expect to see the Oculus Quest 2 news then.
