Google has released the Android security update for October 2020 for Pixel phones (via Droid life), and it’s an important release – especially if you’re a Pixel 4a owner.

The October 2020 update focuses on a security flaw in the system component of Android that could allow an intruder to obtain additional permissions through a “specially crafted broadcast”. Others allow arbitrary code to run, the possible leakage of data through the media framework, and the possibility for unwanted apps to gain additional permissions by bypassing user interaction requirements. All but one bug are still rated “high”, so you should upgrade as soon as possible.

It also includes some fixes for persistent issues with Pixel phones. The 4a now has an improved automatic brightness response in certain lighting conditions and should be more responsive if you use a screen protector.

All currently supported Pixel phones (2+) receive a number of general fixes. The October 2020 Android Update addresses an issue where some devices get stuck on startup and prevents call notifications from being accidentally turned off. The launcher shows corrections for undetected swipe gestures in the overview and in some orientations a missing symbol for the automatic rotation. Every phone that is expected for the Pixel 2 family will also get better auto-rotation in certain orientations.

Unsurprisingly, there are no updates to the Pixel 4a 5G or Pixel 5 if they haven’t been released yet.

The new software is available now if you are using Android 11. It should be available automatically. However, you can install factory images or wireless files if you don’t want to wait.
