Self-driving cars don’t come as quickly as most technology companies and Car manufacturers wanted. That is the cold, hard truth.

While the world is waiting for a breakthrough, chip maker Nvidia is working to play both sides of the segment, revealing a new architecture that meets today’s automaker needs and should serve them tomorrow. It’s called Ampere Architecture and it works with the company’s new Orin system-on-a-chip platform, Nvidia said on Thursday. The single architecture can do everything from advanced driver assistance systems too crowded, Level 5 autonomous drivingSaid Nvidia.

The advantages on paper are immediately apparent. If automakers can save engineering and implement a single platform and chip for multiple functions, it should be a win-win situation. Nowadays there are usually two systems around which automakers develop: basic ADAS and advanced partially autonomous systems. According to the company, the individual architecture should even help the more basic ADAS to become more intelligent.

As the promise of the Robotaxi fleets moves further away, automakers are concentrating on providing more driver assistance systems for more vehicles. At the same time, a handful of automakers have postponed, including, the schedules for self-driving cars ford and General Motors. However, full autonomy remains a holy grail for so many companies that it is highly unlikely that investments will slow down in the foreseeable future.

Nvidia’s new technology will start sampling next year. Production is scheduled for 2022.
